A Collectible Certificate from the GRAY MANUFACTURING COMPANY THE FIRST PAY PHONES IN THE U.S. Although this Company is quite diversified it is most famous for the Instrument pictured here: The Three Coin Slot Pay Telephone! Manufactured by a subsidiary in Hartford Connecticut from the 1920s onward this device became one of the most familiar - and welcome - Hallmarks of City Life. No cell phones back then - and a lot of people couldn't even afford to have a phone in their home! So if you were in a tight spot - and you had a nickel - you were all set to go! Or at least start: because you needed all three Coin Slots and some more change in your pocket if you wanted to call Long Distance. This is the real old one with a separate listening piece on a wire and a speaking piece on the phone itself. How's that for Nostalgia?! Bell System used these phones exclusively well into the 1930s when - fortunate for them - the patents ran out and they could produce their own. The Company based in St Joseph MO produces all sorts of Industrial Equipment, especially recently some first-rate Forklift Jacks. But it is with the Icon pictured on this Certificate that it will be most fondly remembered! With this and other Certificates from my Store (Check out my other items!), you can have a First-Class Original Engraving for that special place on your wall. This Stock is in Extremely Fine Circulated Condition CRISP AND CLEAN and one of two that are nearly identical. You can pay a lot of money - anywhere from $25.00 online outside of eBay and $65.00 at a Specialty Store - for this Certificate or an earlier one with the same Pay Phone on it, but it's yours right now at the LOW, BUY-IT-NOW PRICE of $8.99! [The Certificate you receive will be just like the one you see. It measures about 8.5 inches by 12 inches. It was issued to the Financial Advising Firm of De Haven & Townsend, Crouter & Bodine with Registration Number N8896 or 7 on January 12, 1970. It has quite a few very small pinholes around the vignette - as is often the case with these older certificates - but they are hard to see even on the enlarged scan. It has been punch-cancelled on both sides but against a white background as shown they are not very noticeable. Most importantly the Telephone Vignette is not affected by the Cancellations!] These Collectible Certificates are getting more and more scarce! Yet this is a wonderful time to start learning more about this delightful source of some of the best of the ENGRAVER'S ART!
